What is Domestic Abuse?
domestic abuse
1

Domestic abuse is an incident or pattern of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading, or violent behaviour from a partner, ex-partner, or family member. It is very common and can happen to anyone, at any time in their lives.

Forms of domestic abuse include, but is not limited to:

Physical abuse: hitting, slapping, pushing, using objects or weapons to hurt you
Emotional abuse: insults, threats, humiliation
Psychological abuse: manipulation, gaslighting
Sexual abuse: any unwanted/ nonconsensual sexual contact, being forced to do things you don’t want to do, degrading you during sex
Reproductive coercion: interference with your ability to make decisions about your own body, especially regarding pregnancy, contraception, and sexual health
Financial and economic abuse: controlling money, withholding access to finance, taking out debts in your name (sometimes without you knowing), stopping you from being in work/education/training, having control over spending (i.e. checking receipts)
Coercive control: isolating you, monitoring, or restricting your freedom and choices
Harassment: any form of unwanted contact – phone calls, emails, texts, social media messages, gifts, unannounced visits
Stalking: fixated, obsessive, unwanted and repeated behaviour – in person or online to follow or monitor your movements
