Stuart Applegate from Financial Affairs Raises £1,000 for Local Charities – A Quiz to Remember
More than 80 people gathered at Colne Cricket Club on the evening of Friday, 27th June, in anticipation of a fantastic quiz night. Stuart addressed the room, “Hope you are prepared to quiz!” and so began an epic three-hour quiz that would ultimately raise £1,000 for two local charities: Positive Action in the Community and Lancashire Women.
The quiz was perfectly formed, with a range of questions varying in difficulty, but three elements stood out during the evening. Firstly, the quality of the PowerPoint presentation was five stars. It had clearly been created with a lot of passion and a pinch of fun, and the themed music at the beginning of each round only added to the atmosphere.
Secondly, the flag round was played in a sudden-death style, with only one person from each team participating and being eliminated with just one wrong answer. It brought a new level of visceral, gladiatorial experience to the quiz night – brutal (when my team member got their very first flag wrong!) but so much fun.
Finally, the sudden-death approach returned in the second half with a ‘Higher or Lower’ section. The opening slide, showing pictures of playing cards, lulled the crowd into a false sense of familiarity. In fact, surprise! It was ‘Higher or Lower’ based on celebrity ages. Each consecutive slide showed another celebrity, and the player had to guess if the new celebrity’s age was higher or lower than the previous one. For me, the highlight of the evening was when Stuart slipped pictures of people in the room into this round. Suddenly, contestants were sweating when asked if a friend or colleague was higher or lower than 55-year-old Jennifer Lopez.
All in all, it was a great night, raising an amazing amount of money for two fantastic charities.
A big thank you to Stuart Applegate for creating and hosting such a brilliant quiz night. The money raised will go towards the work that PAC is doing day in, day out to tackle issues in the community around domestic abuse, youth homelessness, and mental health and well-being. Thank you to everyone who participated in the fundraiser and made it possible.
